EMI have announced that they intend to ditch copy protection on their download music. This means you’ll be able to download tracks from EMI signed artists (including Coldplay, Lily Allen and Kylie), and play them on multiple devices.
In a tie up with iTunes, Steve Jobs announced a new “premium download” service at an event in London. iTunes customers will be have to pay more but will be offered DRM free tracks, that are a higher audio quality.
The Apple founder went on to say, “This is a landmark event and the beginning of a major shift taking place this year, resulting in users being able to buy from any music site and play the track on any player.”
It can only be a matter of time before the likes of Sony pitch in and offer DRM free music as well.
