Toshiba in Japan is getting ready to offer an update to its Gigabeat V portable media player in June. This latest version of Toshiba’s PMP will apparently be running the Microsoft Portable Media Center platform - is it perhaps the last device to ever run this deceased interface?
The Toshiba Gigabeat V will come in two storage flavors - 40GB and 80GB - and sport a 4-inch QVGA LCD display which offers 480 x 272 resolution. This display will be capable of 24-bit color and also have a brightness sensor which auto adjusts the screen depending upon exterior lighting conditions.
A built-in speaker system, a reported eight hours of video playback on a rechargeable battery and video recording from a connected source round out the major features of the Toshiba Gigabeat V. These aren’t the only ones of course - you also get things like three display viewing modes, USB charging, support for Windows Vista/Windows Media Player 11, support for Windows Media DRM 10 content, video-out and a kickstand for hands-free viewing.
All-in-all this looks like a well-rounded player. We suppose it has the Portable Media Center platform because Toshiba perhaps retains a license - for now.
